Japanese Ikigai – A reason to get out of bed each morning

When American traveler Dan Buettner searched for places where people lived the longest, he discovered, in addition to places like Sardinia, Italy or Ikaria, Greece, the Japanese island of Okinawa. 🇯🇵 Its inhabitants live to a very old age and rarely suffer from diseases. One reason may be their primarily vegetable-based diet. 🌱 Another important factor may be ikigai. The word ikigai is composed of the words ikiru (life) and kai, which can be translated as having value or benefit. Dan Buettner himself described ikigai as the reason to get out of bed in the morning.

How to discover ikigai – 4 basic values

  • What you love – Are you doing something you truly enjoy? During childhood, we spend time doing the things that make us happy. In adulthood, we are so pressured by societal expectations and duties that we forget about our own interests. Don't waste time doing things that don’t bring you pleasure.
  • What you are good at – Life is more meaningful when you spend time doing things you are good at. For the Japanese, being good doesn't mean being perfect, but trying your best. If you find activities you love and are good at, stick with them.
  • What you can be paid for – In today's society, we can't get by without money, but that doesn't mean we can't do something we also enjoy and are good at, all while getting paid.
  • What the world needs – Everybody wants to help make the world a better place, which is why your work should make sense and be beneficial to the planet. All professions can be meaningful, sometimes it just depends on your perspective.

Of course, Ikigai is not for everyone. The meaning of life is often found at the very top of Maslow's hierarchy of needs – self-realization. It is the result of the fulfillment of all previous levels.

Find activities that fulfill you, you are good at, you get paid for, and that are beneficial to the world. In addition to the meaning of life, greater happiness, motivation, peace, and longevity await you. 🧘‍♀️💛

2022 is the year you will meet your goals

Do you set new year's resolutions every year, but never meet them? Maybe you're just going about it the wrong way. If you don’t exercise, you can’t possibly run a marathon by summer. The same goes for setting too many goals or not being specific enough. Try setting SMART goals. ⬇️

Goal setting – be SMART

  • S – Goals should be specific enough to let you know what you need to do to meet them. Don't set a goal to get a promotion, but make a list of tasks that may result in a promotion.
  • M – Goals should be measurable so you can check your progress. For example, change the goal from "read more" to "read one book per month."
  • A – Be realistic and set achievable goals. Some goals may take more than two months to achieve
  • R – Forget about society’s expectations and focus on goals that are relevant to you.
  • T – Do you want to learn a new skill or a language? Set a time-bound goal in which you will meet the goal so that you’re not tempted to procrastinate.
